Today, on the 1,381 Anniversary of the Battle of Dathin, we remember the 300 Rûm Soldiers that gave their lives alongside their commander, Sergius, for a Romaic Levant. For the Rûm people, today is not a day celebration or bravery, but one of mourning and self-reflection. For although generations have past, the wolves which surrounded Sergius still encircle us.
The Battle of Dathin, which took place after a series of raids, was one of the earliest battles to take place during the Arab-Byzantine Wars. Thus, forever being remembered as the starting point of an age we still live in, an age of Arab tyranny. History tells us that the Rûm Dux, or commander, Sergius assembled a small group of soldiers, and marched from Caesarea to the village of Dathin, not far from Gaza. It was there, on February 4th 634 A.D., that he met the Arab forces commandeered by Abu Umamah al-Bahili. Abandoned by his men, Sergius, and a handful of honorable men, were martyred that day. A new age began that day, an age of tyranny, and all should know, that 300 Rûm gave their lives to try and prevent it
Just as then, we are terrorized by the “raids” of al-Nursa and ISIL. And just as then, there are cowards who want to betray our people. How will we Rûm of today respond? Will we continue to hide under the veil of Arabism, and accept dhimmī status? Or will we join our Syriac, Maronite, and Coptic brothers in embracing our own Rûm Shu'ubiyyah, and stand as equals for a better Levant? A peaceful, and Multi-cultural Levant.

ذكرى الثلاثة مائة! ذكرى سرجيوس!
اليوم في ذكرى 1381 لمعركة داثن, نتذكر الثلاثة مائة الجنود الروم الذين
ضحوا بحياتهم الى جانب قائدهم سرجيوس.
ليس هذا يوم احتفالي او شجاعي للشعب الرومي, بل انه يوم حداد وتأمل ذاتي,
على رغم مرور الاجيال. الذئاب التي تحيط سرجيوس ما زالت لغاية اليوم تطوقنا.
معركة داثن التي وقعت بعد سلسلة من الهجمات, كانت واحدة من اوائل المعارك
التي جرت خلال الحروب العربية-البيزنطية. وهكذا ستُذكر الى الابد كنقطة انطلاق
لعصر ما زلنا نعيش به, وعصر الاستبداد العربي. يخبرنا التاريخ انا دوكس الروم, او القائد
سرجيوس, كون مجموعة صغيرة من الجنود وسار من قيسريا الى قرية وهي ليست بعيدة عن
غزة اسمها داثن. وذلك في 4 فبراير 634 م التقى بالقوات العربية بقيادة ابو امامة
الباهلي. مهجور من قبل رجاله,استشهد سرجيوس وعدد قليل من الرجال الشرفاء في هذا
اليوم.
في ذلك اليوم عصر جديد بدء, عصر الاستبداد وعلى الجميع معرفة ذلك, انه
الثلاثة مائة رومي ضحوا بحياتهم بمحاولة منع ذلك.
تماما كما كان في تلك الفترة, نحن مهددين بالارهاب من "الهجمات"
التي تطلقها جبهة النصرة, وداعش علينا. وتماما كما كان هناك, وما يزال يعيش بيننا
جبناء الذين يجاهدون ليلا ونهارا لخيانة شعبنا. كيف نحن روم اليوم سنرد على ذلك؟
هل سنستمر في التستر والاختباء تحت حجاب العروبة, ونتقبل مكانتنا كأهل الذمة؟ او
سننضم الى اخواتنا السريان, الموارنة والأقباط, في احتضاننا بقوميتنا الرومية,
ونقف متساويين لشرق افضل.لشرق سلمي ومتعدد الحضارات.
